You can easily and quickly invest via the box above.

Mighty Masseto – Italy's most exclusive wine

Masseto is Italy's most iconic wines, a symbol of luxury and excellence that has captured the attention of wine lovers worldwide. Along with Conterno's Monfortino, Masseto is the most exclusive wine in all of Italy. It is by far the most expensive, exactly because it is so iconic. And now you can invest in it. Right from the start.  It probably doesn't get any wilder than this when it comes to Italian wine finesse.

Its story begins in the 1980s at Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, a Tuscan estate founded by Lodovico Antinori, a member of one of Italy's oldest and most influential wine families. Antinori sought to challenge tradition by producing wines that could rival the great Bordeaux, focusing on international grape varieties rather than the region's typical Sangiovese.

In a small, unique vineyard at Ornellaia, where dense blue clay soil was unlike any other in the Bolgheri region, Merlot grapes were found to thrive. This discovery led to the creation of Masseto in 1986, a bold, pure Merlot wine that quickly gained acclaim for its opulent style, rich textures, and deep, complex flavors.

Masseto became part of the "Super Tuscan" movement, a group of wines that defied Italy's traditional wine laws by using non-native grapes, leading to their initial classification as mere "table wines." Despite this, Masseto's quality was undeniable, and it soon garnered rave reviews, high prices at auction, and a place in the cellars of collectors worldwide.

What makes Masseto truly special is its connection to its terroir. The rare blue clay soil gives the wine a distinctive character—powerful yet elegant, with the ability to age beautifully over time. Limited production adds to its exclusivity, making each bottle a prized possession.

Today, Masseto is not just a wine; it’s a legend, a testament to the vision and craftsmanship that transformed an overlooked vineyard into one of the world's most celebrated wines.

Three Reasons To Invest In 2021 Masseto

#1: 100 points demands attention from the entire world of wine lovers

Only two times this century Vinous has awarded a Masseto the 100 perfect points. First with the 2004 Masseto and secondly with this brand-new release.

It is a rare occasion when critics disagree with their judgements. And while Italy expert Vinous judges 2021 Masseto perfect, James Suckling agrees with greatness, awarding 98 points. Wine Advocate awards 95 points, giving it a score across the three critics of 97.7 points - not enough for an absolute top spot, but it certainly consolidates why Masseto has achieved a massive world reputation.

There will always be massive interest when a wine receives 100 perfect points. Especially when an Italian wine receives top scores from the world's leading Italian fine wine expert.Add to this that Masseto currently ranks 34th on Wine-Searcher’s “Top 100 Most Searched For Wines”—with wine-searcher.com processing more than 650,000 searches daily. This ranking highlight that Masseto is in the spotlight of the wine world. This attention is due not only to its global reputation but also to its consistent delivery of exceptionally high-quality wine.

Masseto is in the world’s spotlight.

#2: If not now – then when?

Masseto is known for its high constant quality, but also for the extremely scarce production. Only 32,000 bottles of 2021 Masseto has been produced, and while it may seem like a lot, the annual production of another superior Super Tuscan, Sassicaia, is 180,000 bottles.

And while this may not be the last time we can offer the 2021 Masseto for investment, we do not know when another opportunity will present itself - or what the price will be.

2021 Masseto has only just been released and this is your unique opportunity to join in, just as the starting gun has sounded on one of Italy's most exclusive wines.

#3: Super Tuscan Stability and Triumph

We have long argued that the quality of the best Italian wines has significantly increased over the past 20 years. Moreover, these wines are priced considerably lower when compared to their French counterparts, creating favorable investment opportunities. This also means that Italian wines are in high demand – even during times of crisis – historically proving their stability.

According to Liv-ex, the Italy 100 index has been a beacon of stability amid the broader market downturn. Liv-ex further emphasizes that if Super Tuscans had their own index, it would be the best-performing index year-to-date. Overall, they have risen by 0.5% in 2024 – this in a market where many wines have experienced price corrections.

According to Liv-ex, the last ten vintages* of Masseto that have been on the market for at least five years have delivered an average return of 48.7% over the past five years. This equates to an average annual return of 7%. This performance includes the turbulence and price corrections in the wine market over the past year and a half, which has also affected some of the 10 vintages above negatively.

But to achieve an annual return of 7% in a period including turbulence aligns with the fact, that Super Tuscans shows stability.

Perspective: Perfect Masseto with age

But if we look at the 2004 Masseto, which also received 100 points from Vinous – and have spent a lot more time in the market, where consume has reduced quantity the performance is another. According to Liv-ex 2004 Masseto has delivered an average annual return of 11% the last five years.

This only emphasises that wine investment is a long-term investment. And the greatest returns should be expected to materialise as time passes, the wine matures, and supply reduces.

FYI: The cheapest offer of 2004 Masseto on wine-searcher.com is currently €925*, and according to Vinous, its drinking window is open another 10 years, making room for further price increases to come, as quantities disappear from the market.

2021 is brand new on the market. An according to Vinous, its drinking window will open in 2027 and last until 2050. All it needs it time like the 2004 vintage has had.
