2020 Assortments From Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

The ultimate tasting boxes containing the holy grail of the wine world

What you are presented here is one of those opportunities that are so rare and unique that even those of us who work with these wines daily raise our eyebrows.

It is extremely rare that we can offer originally banded DRC assortments from the latest vintage in the market.

And what a vintage - the 2020 vintage stands across all the wines as one of the best Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has produced from their nine Grand Cru vineyards, two of which are monopolies.

This is truly unique, and if you have the cash, this is an extremely rare and exciting opportunity.

The Holy Grail Of The Wine World

If we put on our investment goggles, the biggest, most expensive, and most exclusive wines have historically seen the highest returns - and DRC is undoubtedly one of them. But DRC is much more than that - there is simply nothing greater in the world of wine. Find out more about what makes DRC extraordinary here: Portrait of the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Two Assortments, Two Options:

We have gotten our hands on two different 2020 assortments - one of them even a complete set with all nine of DRC's Grand Cru wines. Both assortments also contain both the flagship wine Romanée-Conti and and one of DRC's finest white wines from Montrachet.

As the market has evolved, there have been corrections in the prices of some wines, with the most expensive wines, which can experience the most volatility, being particularly affected. In other words, we are in a "buyer's market," and the price of these assortments is reasonable. In fact, the price of each individual wine from the 2019 vintage has been higher than it is for the 2020 vintage, even though 2020 can be characterized as a stronger vintage.

For those with the stomach for it, you can get your hands on what is already extremely rare and only goes to the extremely few - and in the long run, boxes like these will only become even more rare, and the price does not seem to be able to reach a maximum. It certainly has not done so in the last 20 years.

DRC Delivers Strong Returns

As DRC makes their assortments at their own discretion, comparing these over the years is difficult. Alternatively, we have made a comparison here with the price development of the individual wines. The vital thing to note here is that for each wine, it is the last 10 vintages that have been on the market for at least five years. This means that there are many relatively young wines that, historically, only see significant movements when they mature.

2020 DRC Assortment #1

With the first assortment, you get an assortment of the wines DRC is most famous for, including the two monopolies Romanée-Conti and La Tache.

The vintage has been quite generous in terms of both quality and yield but comes on top of the 2019 vintage, where the harvest was decimated. For example, almost 20% less Romanée-Conti was made in 2019. So, despite a generous 2020 vintage, the market lacks DRC in the quantities it is used to.

We have gathered a number of statements that show how good the 2020 vintage really is, and we have chosen to compare based on Burghound's scores, as Burghound is notoriously known for being the most specialized Burgundy critic. But the story is not much different when you look at the other critics' scores across the vintages: 2020 is a huge vintage that is at the forefront across the board.

  • Romanée-Conti: BH: Only one Romanée-Conti has ever scored 100 points: 1945 vintage
  • La Tache: BH: Only one vintage has surpassed the 2020 vintage with 100 points: Vintage 1962
  • Richebourg: BH: Only one vintage has surpassed the 2020 vintage with 98 points: Vintage 1934
  • Romanée St. Vivant: BH: With the exception of THREE vintages (2019, 2010, 2005) that scored 97 points, 96 is the highest an RSV has scored.
  • Grands Echezeaux: BH: With the exception of two vintages (1948, 1966) that scored 97 points, 96 is the highest a Grands Echezeaux has scored.
  • Echezeaux: BH: 95 points is the highest score an Echezeaux has ever received. This is also only given to the 2019 and 2020 vintages.
  • Montrachet: WA: 100 points have only been given to Montrachet by Wine Advocate twice: 2020 and 1986 (2020 Montrachet not tasted by Burghound)

2020 DRC Assortment #2

With Assortment #2, you get a slightly unusual assortment that comes in two boxes: OWC8 and OWC4 - but that is how it is born from the producer.

This assortment is quite simply the ultimate tasting box, where all nine Grand Cru wines are represented, including Romanée-Conti, but also DRC's new Corton-Charlemagne.

2019 was DRC's first Corton-Charlemagne, with only around 5,000 bottles produced - so this spectacular white wine is already in short supply on world markets.
