Domaine d'Auvenay: Where It All Began

On the hills above Auxey-Duresses outside Saint-Romain is a hunting lodge that Lalou Bize-Leroy shared with her husband until his death in 2004. The hunting lodge was named d'Auvenay and gave its name to Domaine d'Auvenay, part of the Leroy empire, which also includes Domanie Leroy and Maison Leroy. The success story dates back to 1868 when François Leroy founded the domain.

In 1955, Lalou Bize Leroy entered the family business. In 1966, Lalou began hosting major wine tastings and dinners so that the prominent chefs and politicians of the time could experience the best of Burgundy. In the year 1980, Lalou and her sister inherited Domaine d'Auvenay from their father, which was eight years before Lalou established Domaine Leroy, and in 1990 she acquired her sister's share of the domain. The rest has a distinguished place in the wine's wonderful history book - alongside Leroy's other fabulous wines.

Four Fantastic Hectares For The Practice Of Wine Magic

The property is extremely important to Lalou Bize-Leroy because it was the family's original domain and is therefore the oldest property associated with the Leroy family. A darling if you will. A darling of only four hectares, covering 16 appellations and including the family's original properties in Auxey-Duresses and Meursault, although Lalou has since added parcels in Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignières, Meursault Gouttes d'Or and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Folatières, as well as five Grands Crus: Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Mazis-Chambertin, and Bonnes-Mares.

The parcels are extremely limited, and the yield is of course the same. These components and Leroy's long-proven magical touch result in Domaine d'Auvenay wines that are both extremely rare and expensive.

Auxey Duresses La Macrabre

In Auxey-Duresses, Domaine d'Auveneay has 0.63 hectares at La Macabrée, from which only about 1650 bottles are annually produced. These almost non-existent quantities are probably also the reason why neither Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Burghound nor Vinous have tasted and rated the 2005 vintage, which is available for investment in the current investment tip.

In its review of the 2010 d'Auveneay Auxey-Duresses La Macabrée, Wine Advocate says something generic about these particular wines that supports the above postulate:

”In any event, these (d’Auveneay Auxey-Duresses La Macabrée RED) remain some of the most riveting wines on the planet. The only problem is finding them.”

With a winemaker like Lalou Bize-Leroy, a negligible quantity, and a massive demand for Burgundy's best, it is not surprising that Domaine d'Auvenay Auxey-Duresses Macabrée in the 2009 vintage is in Liv-ex's top ten most expensive white wines traded on Liv-ex in 2021. The world apparently wants Leroy if it can get it. And clearly at any price.

Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy is one of the absolute best winemakers in the world, and with title naturally comes demand. With that title also comes a responsibility to keep delivering world-class wine, and Leroy is doing just that.
