It happens that a name becomes so exclusive that the product itself becomes secondary. Immanent quality of course underlies the name's path to that status, though the name itself eventually acts as a magnet for the world's attention. Such is the case with Musigny, one of the very best vineyards in Burgundy, the origin of some of the world's most exclusive wines.
The wines of Musigny rhyme with exceptional, rare, and unique, and they are by their very nature extremely hard to find, extremely expensive and extremely in demand.
For the first time, RareWine Invest offers the possibility to invest in different vintages of Jacques-Frédéric Mugniers Musigny, and it is impossible to say when or if the opportunity will be available again...
This option also has a hyped upside coming up. Read much more below...
Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier dates back to 1863, but at that time, the domain was not yet associated with high-end winemaking. The domain was in fact a very successful spirits factory founded by Frédéric Mugnier, and his business acumen was to be of benefit to his descendants, and not least to wine lovers everywhere.
In 1880, the phylloxera ravaged Burgundy, reducing the value of vineyards. And it was precisely here that Frédéric Mugnier began to buy the Chambolle vineyards of the domain. At the beginning of the 20th century, the domain thus included twenty hectares of some of the best vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges respectively.
Frédéric died in 1911, and his children took over the domain with knowledgeable skills. The spirits business thrived, and the wines did well. They were sold in the finest restaurants in Paris and exported to the United States. Unfortunately, Mugnier also had to capitulate, as World War I dominated, and the aftermath was economic crisis.
Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier (grandson of Frédéric) decided to sell the factory and rent out the vineyards. However, the lease ended in 1978 and six years later, Jacques-Frédéric's son Frédéric was fully in charge of the domain. What was born as a spirits success grew up and developed into a beautiful wine success, attracting demand from all over the world.
Today Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier has fantastic and admirable parcels in Les Amoureuses, Bonnes-Mares and of course Musigny, which is their most magnificent wine.
Mythical Musigny
The name Musigny can make the earth tremble and make the most quality-conscious and stubborn hairs on a wine connoisseur's arm stand up and sway blissfully in delight. Indeed, Le Musigny is among the finest in all of Burgundy, alongside Chambertin, Clos de Beze, La Tache and Romanée-Conti, and it is at Le Musigny that some of the world's best winemakers work.
Domaine Comte de Vogue, Lalou-Bize-Leroy, George Roumier and Mugnier produce side by side, and this coexistence is only to the benefit of the wines. Le Musigny measures a total of 10.8 hectares, of which Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier has 1.1 hectares. From here, a Musigny is produced in an absolutely exceptional class, and the annual production is between 2,000 and 5,000 bottles.
This very limited production also means that only the few have the opportunity to even taste or invest in it, although wines from the mythical Musigny are on most people's wish list.
Price Development Shows That Mugnier Musigny Delivers Stable Annual Returns
In this investment case, you have the opportunity to acquire different vintages from Muggier's Musigny production, so it is important to look at how the price development has been on these particular. According to Wine-searcher.com, the trend is clear; the vintages offered in this investment opportunity have seen an average annual price increase of 14.4% since their respective releases.
Musigny is the absolute best from Mugnier, and the uniqueness of this particular wine is that Mugnier only releases a Musigny when they think it is ready. Therefore, Mugnier is compared to many of its colleagues several vintages behind, which is why the world has not yet seen Mugnier's 2015 Musigny. There is undeniable long-term potential with a wine like Mugnier Musigny, as the above price increases also underlines. In this case, however, there is also a factor that boosts the potential in this moment - and that is precisely the 2015 Mugnier Musigny.
The 2015 vintage is a great vintage in Burgundy, and that fact is only reinforced by the scores the world's leading critics have awarded to the 2015 Mugnier Musigny. Burghound awards 98 points, Vinous 99 points and Wine Advocate sends it to the top with 100 points. None of the above critics have previously awarded higher scores to a Mugnier Musigny, making it the best ever, and cementing why, in particular, the 2015 is attracting great attention. The hype of the vintage, the wine's extremely high points, and scarce quantities that are extremely difficult to come by, combine to create an upcoming release that is expected to set a whole new standard for what a Mugnier Musigny can cost.
And, as we know, it is more the rule than the exception that the price of previous vintages follows suit when a new release breaks the barrier. In Burgundy, this has been seen with Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Armand Rousseau, and Comte de Vogue, as well as with the 2008 vintages from major Champagne houses such as 2008 Krug. 2015 Mugnier Musigny is on the way - the best ever, and it is creating increased interest in the previous releases.
Mugnier And The High Level
As mentioned, there are several options in this investment tip, and the scores of the available wines are shown in the table below along with scores from the upcoming 2015 Mugnier Musigny - this to underline the overall top level from one of Burgundy's elite producers. In addition, it also establishes that the hype surrounding the 2015 Mugnier Musigny is justified.

Assortment case as an extra option
In addition, in this investment case there is the opportunity to invest in a Mugnier assortment case, containing three bottles of 2005 Mugnier Musigny, and three 2005 Mugnier Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses. And as the figures below show, Les Amoureuses is rated at the same high level, which presumably has to do with the fact that, according to Mugnier itself, Musigny and its neighbour Les Amoureuses share some of the same characteristics.

RareWine Invest's Opinion
Due to the great scores for the 2015 Mugnier Musigny, it will surely attract a lot of attention and the release price is expected to break records. And when a given wine gets a lot of attention, it will be quite natural for the wine lover to take a closer look at the previous vintages of the same wine. Especially in this case, because the supply is scarce, meaning it cannot come close to satisfying the demand. As current consumption has reduced the quantities available, the price will gradually increase.
This possibility is rare because Musigny itself is extremely difficult to obtain. And rare because a scenario like this is far from common. In this investment tip, the quantities are of course limited, but in turn spread over several vintages - a result of blood, sweat and famous tears, and considerable work to provide Mugniers Musigny, for exactly this purpose: to give you the chance to invest, at a time that seems particularly favorable, given the upcoming 2015 vintage.
Thus, we do not single out one vintage over another. The choice is a matter of temperament. But make no mistake, it is a privilege to be able to acquire Mugnier Musigny at all - being able to choose the vintage is an added bonus.
Mugnier Musigny will be a crown jewel in most portfolios and a treasure for future wine lovers and collectors. If you want to secure such a jewel, now is the time.
