Investment Tips - Champagne - 12. November 2021

New release: The monumental 2008 vintage is finally here. Pink, bubbling desire for Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé.

Rosé Champagne is more popular than ever. Great scores, attractive returns, and limited supply frame this investment tip.

Therefore Taittinger Comtes De Champagne. Therefore Rosé!

Every time RareWine Invest offers the world's best champagnes for investment, there is a race for the magical bubbles. Now we are going to talk a bit about Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé, and we expect it to be a very good acquaintance - and there are some very special reasons for that.

Champagne Taittinger can proudly boast of being among the oldest estates in Champagne, and their years of experience in the Champagne industry are reflected in their prestige cuvée - Comtes de Champagne. A champagne that can rightly so be compared to both Dom Pérignon and Cristal in quality.

Taittinger also produces a limited rosé version of their prestige cuvée, and it often receives greater scores from critics. Rosé Champagne is on a roll and interest in the pink bubbles is understandably steadily increasing.

Rosé Champagne Outperforms Champagne

According to the British wine exchange Liv-ex the rosé champagne outperforms the Champagne 50 index. Add to this the fact that trade in rosé Champagne by value is three times higher than the average over the past three years. Furthermore, triple-digit growth rates have been seen among some of the world's best rosé Champagnes since the start of 2021: including Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé.

In addition, Taittinger has made its mark in the Champagne market. In a statement by Liv-ex from July 2021, Salon and Dom Pérignon are linked to the Champagne 50 index's strong growth. Closely followed by Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne.

Ergo: Roséchampagne is popular. And Taittinger is making its mark.

This Comtes Rosé is from 2008, and it is a vintage that makes the pulse of any Champagne lover rise.

2008: What Is The Hype About?

Legendary. Monumental. Out of this world.

2008 is a praised vintage in the Champagne world because all Champagne producers experienced ideal conditions in their vineyards. If there is a weather god, it cast a spell over Champagne in this particular vintage. And that is why there are always great expectations for the vintage Champagnes that emerge from 2008.

2008 Champagne: A Treat That Only Gets More Expensive

As Champagne lovers and portfolio advisors alike, we had our sights set on the 2008 vintage of Champagne long before the first ones were released, and focused on the releases as they came, for one reason: 2008 is and will be legendary - and that offers Champagne investors great opportunities - especially for those who are in from the start, but also on an ongoing basis.

Below we have collected the Champagne cases from the 2008 vintage from the first time we have offered and recommended them. Considering that wine and Champagne investing should be viewed in a longer perspective, where historically the greatest returns have come the older the wine gets, the 2008 Champagnes have gotten off to a great start.

Most recommendations are online and can be found here.

The 2008 Comtes de Champagne Rosé now offers an opportunity to get off to a flying start:

This Is How Comtes De Champagne Rosé Is Rated

The 2008 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé is so new to the market that Vinous has not yet rated it. This of course has an impact on the average score of the 2008 vintage below. As it currently stands, it is ranked at the top only surpassed by the 2007 vintage. However, it only needs a score of 96 points from Vinous to match the 2007 vintage. A score above this sends 2008 right to the top - something that is certainly not unlikely, given the vintage 2007's 97 points.

Whatever the outcome from Vinous, Richard Juhlin and the Wine Advocate has rated the 2008 vintage highly, and this is a clear indication that Taittinger has taken advantage of the favorable weather conditions in 2008.

This Is How It Turned Out For The 2007 Vintage

Back in August 2021 we had the 2007 Comtes Rosé for investment at a price of € 120. Today the price is € 135. Those who invested have therefore already achieved a return of + 12.5 %. And from the perspective that wine investment should be seen as a long-term investment, this is extremely impressive in just three months.

As mentioned, there is a growing demand for rosé Champagne, and it is very reasonable to assume that this is also where we should find the explanation for why 2007 Comtes Rosé has risen so much in such a short time. But when it comes to Taittinger, the scale of production matters a great deal.

Limited Supply Of Comtes Rosé

Taittinger annually produces about five million bottles of Champagne. Of the five million, only 150,000-300,000 are thought to be the prestige cuvée Comtes de Champagne. The rosé Champagne is even more limited, which means that there is a low supply of the coveted pink prestige bubbles.

And the world's Champagne-drinking consumers are reducing the scarce drops in record time.

Huge Unexploited Potential

The Comtes score well, but as the table below shows, the two mastodons, Dom Pérignon Rosé and Cristal Rosé, generally get a bit more support from the critics. Here, however, it is particularly interesting to pay attention to the prices.

2008 Comtes Rosé only costs about half of what a Cristal Rosé costs. And it is at least 35 % cheaper than what we expect the 2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé to cost when it hits the market.

The same scenario unfolds with the 2006 vintage, which is a relatively new vintage for all three Champagne houses. Here, Cristal Rosé costs more than twice as much as Comtes Rosé, while Dom Pérignon Rosé is 60% more expensive than Comtes Rosé.

And last... But certainly not least... We have the 2002 vintage, which is also a big vintage for all three houses. 2002 Cristal Rosé has become wildly expensive, while the price of both Dom Perignon and Taittinger's rosé Champagnes seems extremely low priced. Yet. Something that is particularly interesting here is that the 2002 Comtes Rosé is virtually impossible to find (as are previous vintages).

Because Comtes de Champagne is generally a "cheaper" Champagne compared to the two mastodonts, it has simply been bought, drunk and forgotten. Not saved. Therefore, mature vintages of Comtes de Champagne Rosé are extremely hard to come by, and if you can deliver in the future, you will have an extremely attractive product on your hands.

We see enormous unexploited potential in Comtes de Champagne - both in rosé and regular Champagne. The characteristics of Comtes de Champagne are usually only seen in significantly more expensive wines, and while interest in rosé Champagne is increasing, it also suggests that prices will do the same.

See the comparison between price and quality of the three great rosé champagnes below:

Wine RJ WA VI AVG Price
2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé 96 - 97 96,5 € +350*
2008 Cristal Rosé  98 100 99 99,0 € 550
2008 Comtes de Champagne Rosé 94 96 - 95,0 € 225
2006 Dom Pérignon Rosé 96 95 97 96,0 € 255

2006 Comtes de Champagne Rosé 93 93 95 93,7 € 155
2002 Dom Pérignon Rosé 96 98 98 97,3 € 325
2002 Cristal Rosé 97 100 98 98,3 € 700
2002 Comtes de Champagne Rosé  96 - 95 95,5 € 300
*2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé is not yet released. This is therefore our best guess at what the price will be, for comparison.

RareWine Invest's Opinion

We are still waiting for a score from Vinous. But we are not waiting for anything that might indicate an investment potential. Indeed, it is clear.

The rosé Champagne as a category is on intense charm offensive, and it is working. The growth rates certainly show that, whether you look at prices or volumes traded. In addition, we are dealing with a strong Champagne house that represents a strong brand and produces Champagne and rosé Champagne that is absolutely world-class. 2008 is certainly no exception.

Add to this the fact that there is a favorable relationship between quality and price. Especially when we compare Comtes Rosé with both Cristal Rosé and Dom Pérignon Rosé. To top it all off, we have a rapidly increasing consumption of rosé Champagne and a very scarce supply. It will not be long before the thirst for the pink drops has significantly reduced the supply of 2008 Comtes de Champagne Rosé - and then it really starts to be interesting to own this wine.

But something you almost forget in the enchantment of Comtes de Champagne Rosé is that we are dealing with a 2008, something that is basically extremely interesting when we talk about Champagne investment - something the previous cases also testify to.

If you also believe in the rosé Champagne, you should invest now.

The 2008 Comtes de Champagne is a fresh release, and we have managed to source a good portion that will allow you to take a larger position. But we recommend acting fast - pressure is on this one.
