Extremely Unexploited Potential: Microscopic Quantities Of 2014 Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet
Boillots represent the future of white Burgundy grand cru. And with less than 1,800 bottles of Batard-Montrachet per vintage gives it an untapped potential
“This is an outstanding Batard-Montrachet from Henri Boillot, one that comes highly recommended”
- Neal Martin, Wine Advocate
2014 is described as the best white wine vintage in Burgundy since 1996. The above quote is from when Neal Martin (Vinous) reviewed wines for Wine Advocate. The Batard-Montrachet from Henri Boillot to which he refers is from the 2014 vintage and provides a fitting introduction to this investment tip.
This case is a formidable example of unexploited potential. Henri Boillot is deservedly among Burgundy's very best producers, knocking on the door of the top wine elite where Domaine Leflaive and d'Auvenay reside - but at a price far below. While it lasts....
Henri Boillot - A Family Business That Strives To Capture The Quality Of Its Vineyards
The Boillot family began making wines in the early 1900s and is today known for producing some of the Côte de Beaune's finest white wines. Henri Boillot was the first to really kick-start the production from the family's wines, and later his son Jean expanded the domain. Jean's son, Henri, was born into the domaine and became responsible for the entire winery in 1975, after working his way up the company's wine ladder step by step.
In 2000 Henri Boillot built the cellars and winery in Meursault, and in 2008 Henri's son Guillaume joined the team. In 2011, they expanded the cellars and buildings in Meursault, as well as purchased vines in Puligny-Montrachet - particularly in the Batard-Montrachet appellation.
Domaine Henri Boillot is strategically located between Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay located in Meursault. These two appellations have become their specialty and they work every day to express the essence of these vines.
Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru
When it comes to white wines from Burgundy, Maursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet are the most important communes. At Henri Boillot, quality is the common denominator in all the wines that come from the domain. Be it wines like Corton-Charlemagne Blanc, Puligny-Montrachet Mouchere and Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which this investment tip is about.
But Boillot's impressive portfolio is not limited to this, but also includes Meursault Genevrieres, Puligny Montrachet Pucelles and Montrachet.
Ratings Underlines The Quality
Henri Boillot's dedication to his wines in an almost supernatural way is reflected in the high quality of his wines. Burghound, if anything, has his taste buds and nose well buried in Burgundy wines, which is why his scores are particularly interesting.
Burghound awards the 2014 Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet a stunning 96 points. That is a fabulous score in itself, cementing the level of this wine. The quick viewer will however see overall great scores awarded by Burghound, which only underlines that Henri Boillot knows what he is doing. Time and time again.
With an average score of 95.2, the 2014 vintage is one of the best of Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet. In fact, in recent times it is only surpassed by the 2019 vintage, which has yet to be scored by Vinous. But it will take more than 94 points for the 2019 to top the 2014 vintage. Whether this happens or not, time will tell, but the 2019 vintage is described as the best vintage in Burgundy since 1865. And the 2014 vintage matches it.

Chardonnay In Less Than Sparse Quantities
According to Henri Boillot's own website, their Bartard-Montrachet comes from 0.3223 hectares of the 11-hectare Batard-Montrachet vineyard. Furthermore, they state that they yield 40 hl/ha, which gives an annual production of less than 1,800 bottles.
Being in Burgundy and even having a grand cru classification, producers must produce between 40-64 hl/ha. The fact that Henri Boillots chooses to keep yields to a minimum show that quality is far more important than quantity.
This is not just a very high-quality wine. It is even produced in extremely sparse quantities.
Premature Oxidation: What Does It Mean For This Case?
In the years after the millennium, a very unfortunate trend was discovered among white wines from Burgundy. Namely, many vintages from the 1990s were oxidized and therefore undrinkable. It was hoped that this was some isolated cases, but unfortunately it was not. However, this problem has been dealt with, but the fact that these challenges were encountered is nevertheless important for this case.
What it means is that a significant proportion of the earlier quality white vintages from Burgundy are out of the picture, which just makes the later vintages even more interesting.
White Wine, Grand Cru, Burgundy. Nothing More Is Needed
The best Burgundy wines come from Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Around 2 million bottles of grand cru are produced here every year. Of these 2 million, only 400,000 bottles are white. So it is an 80-20 ratio between the main red and white wines in Burgundy. This, combined with a growing global demand for white wine, offers a nice investment potential.
As mentioned, only 1,800 of these bottles are Henri Boillot's Bartard-Montrachet.
In Deservedly Excellent Company
White grand cru from Burgundy is coveted if the right producers are behind it. Side by side with Henri Boillot in Côte de Beaune, big players work their wine magic. Names like Domaine d'Auvenay, Domaine Coche-Dury, and Domaine Leflaive draw Burgundy's absolute white wine elite, but right behind them comes Henri Boillot who has proved that their wines can easily play ball.
Domaine Leflaive also makes a Batard-Montrachet and by comparison, their 2014 vintage gets 93-95 points from Burghound. The same Burghound that awards 96 points to the 2014 Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet. The 2014 Leflaive costs around € 800 while you can invest in the 2014 Batard-Montrachet from Boillot for € 575.
Rarewine Invest's Opinion
We will not hide that we at RareWine Invest are enthusiastic about the best white Burgundies. And this 2014 Henri Boillit Batard-Montrachet is in that category. This is supported by the scores for the 2014 vintage, but also by the fact that the high scores are consistent. The quality is thus not isolated and is helping to build a white wine brand that we believe will be one of the very best in the future.
This is an extremely untapped potential. Henri Boillot has proven that he is among the best white wine producers in Burgundy. But the price far from substantiates that fact. Therefore, the investment potential is great.
In addition, we are here dealing with a quality white wine in incredibly scarce quantities. Even in a category that is becoming more and more popular. Quality, demand and low supply are the wine investor's best indications for good investment. Here you go: All three here are in action.
Here, you even have the opportunity to buy an investable batch of a wine that rates higher than Leflaive by Burgundy Burghound - and costs significantly less.
2014 is the best white wine vintage in Burgundy since 1996. If you are interested in getting a bite of this vintage, this is a formidable opportunity.
