Argiano, A Classic Winery In Brunello
Argiano is one of the great classic estates in central Italy. The buildings themselves have existed for a very long time, and viticulture has been practiced for more than 400 years. The vineyards are situated around the impressive estate. So, it is no wonder that Argiano in 1967 was one of the founders of the entire Brunello di Montalcino.
From the beginning, Argiano has been one of the pioneers, which is something that is still being pursued. The latest development began as recently as 2013, when Bernardino Sani acquired ownership and production at the winery. Today, Argiano is a leader in organic and sustainable thinking, both in the vineyard and the winery.
Argiano is in many ways a classic estate but has nevertheless shown abilities to take the lead and will in all likelihood be one of the major powerhouses among Italian wines in the future.
Solengo - The Super Tuscan Of Brunello
The story of Argiano Solengo actually began with Sassicaia, probably one of the most famous Italian wines of recent times. Here, Giacomo Tachis worked as an oenologist and consultant, and later in his work, he could not get away from the idea of making a wine similar to Sassicaia, but in the Brunello area. This became a reality after Argiano planted French grape varieties, culminating in the first Argiano Solengo in 1995. A wine described by Robert Parker himself as "a brilliant wine!
The style of Solengo has never been as precise as in the last vintages. Today, half of Solengo is Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest is Merlot, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot.
Cabernet Sauvignon has gradually proven itself in Tuscany and time will tell if the Brunello area is as suitable for this variety as Bolgheri (read: Ornellaia & Sassicaia) or Chianti Classico (read: Tignanello & Vigna d'Alceo). With Argiano Solengo as the forerunner, there is really something to suggest that.
The 2019 Vintage
2019 Argiano Solengo is an early impression of the great 2019 vintage in Tuscany. The vintage is already being compared to 2015 and 2016, which are both five-star vintages.
The 2019 vintage in Tuscany promises to be an excellent one in every aspect, with great quality in the best wines. The wines with the official legal name "Brunello di Montalcino" will not be released until 2024, but the Argiano Solengo, which with its IGT classification can be described as a bit of a black sheep in this context, is already available now. The vintage had a really good growing season with lots of sunshine, which made for good ripe grapes. In the Brunello area where the Solengo is grown, cool nights have been enjoyed recently before the harvest, which has given this wine the finishing touch.
2019 Argiano Solengo - Here Is The Potential
We are still at such an early stage in the life cycle of this wine that we are still waiting for the ratings from the major critics (Wine Advocate, Vinous and James Suckling), which in itself could mean a strong upward trend if any of these major critics prove to be particularly excited.
But if we look at the price performance of Solengo's 2015 and 2016 vintages, vintages that are generally described as comparable to the 2019 vintage for the area, we can get a good sense of the potential:
Vintage | Price summer 2020* | Price today** | Return |
---|---|---|---|
2015 | € 37 | € 45-50 | 21,5-35 % |
2016 | € 37 | € 50 | 35% |
2019 | - | € 31 | - |
The figures speak for themselves, and even if the 2019 Solengo does not quite reach the level of the 2015 and 2016 vintages, there is still tremendous potential in this new vintage.
In addition, Argiano produces a total of about 340,000 bottles of wine per year. Of these, about 100,000 bottles are Brunello di Montalcino, which is a very limited quantity for the entire wine world when talking wine of this quality and price. According to Wine Advocate, Argiano only produces just under 30,000 bottles of Solengo in good vintages.
RareWine Invest’s Opinion
Back to the core of the case. Will a wine lover even discover if the price of a wine like the 2019 Argiano Solengo increases by €5-10 just like that? Probably not.
Either way, the 2019 Argiano Solengo has the potential to be a strong Super Tuscan and an even stronger investment when we consider the potential of the 2019 vintage in combination with Argiano's expertise.
You now have the opportunity to get involved in the investment at an early stage, and so you also currently have an attractive opportunity to buy into larger quantities of a wine which in every way is in line with the trends we are seeing in the market, where Italian wines are becoming more and more coveted.
