2018 Coche-Dury Meursault Blanc
When it comes to investment, white wine is mentioned more and more often - and rightly so. Burgundy is the undisputed stronghold, and Coche-Dury one of the top producers
2018 Coche-Dury Meursault - White Wine Potential From Burgundy
Here is the opportunity to invest in one of the finest producers in Burgundy. A producer whose white wines are mentioned on par with the wines of Domaine Leroy and Domaine Leflaive. Some would even call Coche-Dury the king of Meursault, which most people would agree with.
These are popular white wines with a great consumption and at the same time a fantastic potential to develop over time. Interest in the best producers in Burgundy is sky high from wine lovers and demand, as we all know, is a key element in any good investment. Not least, the 2018 Coche-Dury Meursault, which is a terrific wine in a great vintage, but priced below the absolute best whites. That opens up for great consumption by wine lovers everywhere - and consumption is another of the essential elements of a good wine investment. As often in Burgundy, the quantities are limited and therefore, the way is paved for a solid investment case.
One Of The Greatest Winemakers On Earth
Coche-Dury is always described in superlatives - and with good reason. Today, Raphael Coche is in charge, but his father, Jean-Francois, is still involved in both the vineyard and the cellar, where his flair for quality winemaking is fully exploited.
In fact, Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate has described Jean-Francois as "one of the greatest winemakers on planet earth". This says quite a lot when coming from Parker's experienced mouth.
Raphael Coche - Fourth Generation At This Iconic Domain
Domaine Coche-Dury was founded in the 1920s by Leon Coche, who acquired a few vineyards around Meursault. George Coche later took over and extended with small land acquisitions. In 1973, son Jean-Francois carefully took over and led the domain up the ladder. Under his demanding leadership, nine hectares were cultivated - Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie and Volna.
He confidently handed over the business to his son Raphael in 2010.
Raphael Coche is today the man who is responsible for this iconic domain. The domaine does not release much more than 3,500 cases of wine a year, yet they have earned a reputation on par with the very best when it comes to white wine of Burgundy.
Raphael works in both the vineyards and the cellar with his father. His passion for the vineyards in particular keeps Jean-Francois active when the vines need tending. His knowledge and almost nerdy interest in pruning the vines is perhaps one of the little things that takes quality at Coche-Dury to the top.
Meursault - An Example Ef Coche-Dury´s High Level
Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet are the three most important communes when it comes to white wines of Burgundy.
Meursault stands out for producing wines with good intensity and great potential. In recent generations, Coche-Dury has placed itself at the very top of the wine podium, in the prestigious company of Leroy and Comtes Lafon.
Meursault is the only wine you can find in slightly larger quantities from Coche-Dury. However, that does not make this a wine that can be found on every street corner, as we are still only talking about four hectares of vineyards spread within the Meursault appellation. Therefore, this is classic Burgundy with limited production.
At Coche-Dury, harvests are even significantly lower than the permitted 64 hectolitres per hectare. This means that the concentration and quality of the grapes are absolutely at the top. In general, traditions are kept to maintain the quality at an unchanged high level.
2018 Coche-Dury: The Best We Have Seen In The Last Decade
Raphael Coche has described the 2018 vintage as a hot and dry vintage that produced quality wine. 2018 was also the year when strong winds left the ground cracked and fissured. Despite some harsh weather conditions, Coche says:
"The yield was actually quite good, and the best we've seen in the last decade"
The enthusiasm of the 2018 vintage is backed up by opinions from both Burghound and The Wine Advocate. Burghound awards the 2018 Coche-Dury Meursault an impressive 92 points and states:
"Also, this wine is very impressive because of its level and especially because of the excellent depth"
The Wine Advocate agrees with the 92 points, and states:
"The wine is truly very promising"
Rarewine Invest's Opinion
Coche-Dury has for ages made it clear that they belong to the top producers in Burgundy, and that is of course a place that obliges. With the 2018 Meursault Blanc vintage, they once again show that they work seriously in both vineyard and cellar, and with an end product that ranks among the very best Coche-Dury Meursault Blanc ever, according to the leading wine critics.
Top producer, a limited production, a high demand, a high consumption as well as praising words and excellent scores from renowned critics underline that this vintage has great investment potential. It also fits in with the trend we are seeing for white wine investments, where it is almost exclusively Burgundy that investors from all over the world are demanding.
The fact that we are not dealing with the top wine Corton-Charlemagne from Coche-Dury also means that the price level is completely different, which opens up a larger consumption. And this is precisely why we see that the market for the second and third best wines from the absolute top producers is attractive for investment. Thus, the comparable 2016 Coche-Dury Meursault Blanc has also increased by over 13% in 2021.
Now you have the opportunity to start or complete your portfolio with a white wine investment and even from one of the top producers in magical Burgundy.
