The Story About Mouton-Rothschild 1945
May the 5th marks the end of World War II in Denmark. Today we commemorate those who fought for our country during the war.
In our warehouse, we have a rare bottle from 1945 with the text "Année de la Victoire" - the year of victory. The wine comes from the legendary Château Mouton-Rothschild and has a special label designed by French illustrator Philippe Jullian.
A Beautiful Tradition Is Born
The end of the war meant that the castle's owner, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, could return to his beloved Château. He was of Jewish descent and had to flee to England from a German prison during the war.
Bordeaux had been somewhat unconventionally hit by severe night frosts on May 2nd 1945 and it resulted in the smallest harvest since 1915.
That year the baron himself took part in the harvest and Mouton-Rothschild 1945 is widely being recognized as one of the world's best wines ever. The end of the war was marked by the special label and inscription. A mark that has been retained since 1945 and right up to the present day.
Famous label
Well-known artists such as Picasso, Andy Warhol, Chagall, and Prince Charles have contributed to the labels.
Danish artist Per Kirkeby designed the label in 1992 - which marks another special year in Danish history. Denmark surprisingly won the European Championship in football that year.
