Vintage 2016 In Brunello Di Montalcino - The Greatest Ever
The 2016 vintage shows unique tendencies. It is simply a vintage that will stand as a legendary and memorable vintage, regardless of whether we look 5 or 50 years ahead.
If you look back at some of the greatest Brunello vintages, 2016 will stand out, both greater and more magnificent than the others. 2006, 2010, 2015 will all simply come to stand in the shadow of vintage 2016 in the future. Brunello di Montalcino from this vintage is in such perfect balance that the most important wine critics are extremely excited. The producers are also happy - they can see how great wines they have made.
Vinous, which is the great authority in Italian wines, has recently released scores on most, if not all, of the essential wines from this vintage, and there is a clear trend - the quality is high like never before. Wine Advocate has only released a few scores so far. This means that the wine investor can secure strong Brunellos with high scores from Vinous, with an extra potential upside in the wines not yet reviewed by Wine Advocate.
As always, Brunello di Montalcino will be released on January 1st in the fifth year after the harvest, so the physical release of the 2016 vintage is just around the corner. This year, there are a few producers who have offered some of their wines for sale before the official release date. This is done to satisfy the large American market, which accounts for almost a quarter of all Brunello di Montalcino sold - a huge market where Italian wines have escaped punitive tariffs from Trump's major trade war against the EU.
The quantities in the 2016 vintage are not larger than usual, which means less than the demand for the best producers, but we will only really see a sub-supply in the future when the 2016 vintage from Brunello di Montalcino has found its way into the history books of the legends. This vintage has provided wines with huge development potential and allows the wine investor to make some extremely attractive investments.
The 2016 Vintage - For The Wine Nerds
The 2016 vintage has in Montalcino's various sub-areas allowed a longer growing season before the grapes had reached the optimal ripeness. The longer ripening gives grapes with a little more excitement and flavor intensity, which ultimately benefits the wines. Overall, the vintage was slightly cooler than the large vintage 2015, with a little more scattered rain during the growing season, which has given a slightly better balance in the grapes - a balance that today shows completely new dimensions.
Legendary Vintages
2016 Brunello di Montalcino can be compared to other epic vintages in large classic wine regions. For example, with 2001 Sauternes, where the best wines were about to surpass the 100-point scale. If we are comparing with Burgundy, it will be vintage 2015, where the weather smiled at the producers and gave completely unique wines. The big comparison for Brunello di Montalcino, will not be the fantastic vintage 2015, but will instead be closer to the record vintage 2010. Still, the 2016 wins, where both the weather was perfect, and the producers had been ready to do what it took to produce the most beautiful wine. There is no doubt that 2016 stands as the strongest vintage ever in Brunello di Montalcino.
The Italian Movement
The Italian top wines continue to win, and while the hype among the greatest wines seems to have come to stay, they also draw interest in the wines in both the 2nd and 3rd rows. A strong indication that interest in Italian wines is rising sharply can be found if you look at historical trade data. In a report released in August 2020, Liv-ex describes a historic growth among Italian wines. Liv-ex describes that the value of the trade in wines on the secondary market has increased on average by 9% per year for the past 10 years. If you look at Italian wines in isolation during the same period, they have risen as much as 28.5%.
If this development is seen together with the format of the already iconic vintage 2016 by Brunello di Montalcino, everything points to the fact that there are some very attractive wine investments and some of the most coveted wine treasures of the future to be found here.
