Only 25,000 Bottles Of Ambonnay Since 1995: Invest In Rare Champagne From Krug
Q3 2020 has come to an end and shows once again that champagne is an attractive place to be invested. The same is true of Krug and this extremely rare single-plot Champagne
Prodigious Focus On Champagne
At RareWine Invest, we have long been advocates for Champagne as one of the primary categories when it comes to investing in fine wine. This is also reflected in our recommended portfolio composition, where Champagne today accounts for as much as 30%.
From 2015, while the majority of the wine world was looking towards Bordeaux, we focused on Burgundy and the investors who followed these recommendations have since been able to enjoy Burgundy prices rise by more than 46% during the past five years*.
Although Burgundy today still occupies 40% of our recommended portfolio composition, we have continuously given Champagne more focus and believe that we are facing an enormous untapped potential here - in the same matter as we have previously seen in Burgundy. A potential that the forthcoming quarterly report for Q3 2020 also points in the direction of.
To make it short, Champagne is an exciting place to invest in, and if you, like us, believe in the great potential, there is an opportunity here to invest in one of Champagne's most exclusive and rare gems, in a vintage where the scores has never been higher: Invest in the 2002 Krug Clos d'Ambonnay
The quarterly report for Q3 2020 will be released before the end of this month.

Rare Gem From Perhaps The World's Best Champagne House
When it comes to Champagne, there are a few wines that are at the forefront in all of their respective categories, but only one producer is at the very top across the entire product portfolio - and that is Krug. Krugs non-vintage Champagne, Grande Cuvée, is considered by many to be the world's best non-vintage Champagne. Krug's vintage Champagne, Krug Vintage Brut, is of such high quality that it surpasses both Cristal and Dom Pérignon and is really only in competition with Salon.

As if that wasn’t enough, Krug is also behind two of the finest, best and most legendary single-plot Champagnes in the world, namely Krug Clos du Mesnil and Krug Clos d’Ambonnay. Here, in the best Burgundian style, absolutely sublime wines have been cultivated, in extremely limited production from two of the finest vineyards in Champagne, namely Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, respectively.
Both Champagnes are produced exclusively in the absolute best vintages, which in combination with an extremely limited production means that these champagnes are extremely rare - already at the time of release.
The Amazing Single Vineyard Plot Champagnes Of Krug
Clos du Mesnil
Clos du Mesnil's 1.84 hectares provide just around 12,000 bottles of champagne a year. The first year was released in 1979 and since then only 20 years have been released with the 2006 vintage being the latest. This means that the total production of Clos du Mesnil in the last 40 years is less than a quarter of a million bottles. By comparison, Moët & Chandon produces around 30 million bottles a year.
Clos d’Ambonnay
The Clos d’Ambonnay vineyard measures just 0.68 hectares and production are limited to just around 5,000 bottles per vintage. Only five vintages of Clos d’Ambonnay have been released, with 1995 as the first and 2002 as the latest. This means that only around 25,000 bottles of Krug Clos d’Ambonnay have been released - ever!
Sublime Single-plot Quality: The 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay Is Among The Best Ever
The large single-plot Champagnes, such as Krugs Clos du Mesnil, Clos d’Ambonnay and Bollinger’s Vieilles Vignes Francaises (VVF), are all characterized by a sublime level and a towering quality. Even in this perspective, the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay stands out. The 2002 vintage is in fact the best Clos d’Ambonnay ever released, judged on scores across the biggest critics*. The 2002 vintage has received 99 points from Wine Advocate and 98 points from Vinous but has not yet received a score from Richard Juhlin. However, Richard Juhlin can give all the way down to 96 points, which seems unlikely, and the average score for the the 2002 vintage will even be the highest among all the Ambonnays if that should be the case anyway. Comparing the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay with the Clos du Mesnil and Bollinger VVF, it is also one of the absolute greatest in the last 35 years, which only further emphasizes the format of this Champagne.

2002 Clos d’Ambonnay: Last Chance?
With more than five years since its release, the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay is becoming an old trotter, as evidenced by the quantities available on the world market. At the same time, this means that the opportunities for investing in this Champagne will also only be fewer, while the older versions today are extremely difficult to find at all. Under normal Champagne circumstances, there is always a release of a new vintage right in the wake of the previous one, which at the same time means that the previous vintage is sold out. With Clos d’Ambonnay, it remains uncertain both what the next vintage will be and when it will arrive. There are many indications that both the 2003, 2004 and 2005 vintages have been skipped, which is why 2006 could be the next obvious Ambonnay vintage. From here, however, the guess is that Krug has taken it easy and is waiting to release a new Clos d’Ambonnay until the 2008 vintage is completely ready and can be sent to market in a true fireworks display.
Either way, one thing is for sure: the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay is one of a kind and quantities are very limited, and this may be the last chance for investment. At the same time, a long prospect of new release could provide an extensive Ambonnay drought that could make existing bottles even more attractive. Finally, the next release of the Clos d’Ambonnay will most likely be released at a record high price, which could further help to pull up the prices of the surrounding vintages further.
RareWine Invest's Opinion
We have on previous occasions referred to Krugs Clos d’Ambonnay as Champagnes Romanée-Conti and for good reason. This is simply one of the most exclusive and rare Champagnes in the world - there is basically nothing that generally tops this single-plot Champagne.
This is your opportunity to buy the 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay, which is both the best Ambonnay to date, and also one of the greatest single-plot Champagnes in the last 35 years.
Furthermore, the prospect of continued Ambonnay drought makes investing in this Champagne even more interesting, while a future major potential upside in record-breaking new release of Clos d’Ambonnay should not be ignored either.
Champagne is also a category with enormous potential, which we have a strong focus on. In addition, it should be remembered that Krug is owned by LVMH Group, which is the world's largest luxury company, which undoubtedly has an interest in making Champagne both more expensive, more widespread and even more sought after in the future.
If you believe in price increases among the best, most exclusive and rarest Champagnes, as we have seen with Burgundy wines, for example, then the large single-plot Champagnes are interesting to you and here is Krugs Clos d’Ambonnay at the forefront.
