+25% in Less than 12 Months: Rouget Cros Parantoux shines in Burgundy
Rouget Cros Parantoux is rare and legendary. Easy to love, almost impossible to obtain. This is an uncommon opportunity - don't wait too long!
The Tractor Mechanic, the Legend and mythical Cros Parantoux
In 1976, a tractor mechanic from Cotes de Nuits in Burgundy was offered a job by his wine-producing uncle who almost immediately engendered enormous interest and enthusiasm for wine production in his nephew. The uncle was the legendary Henri Jayer, and the name of the young tractor mechanic was Emmanuel Rouget. Henri Jayer is one of the most excellent wine producers that Burgundy has ever produced and is widely recognised for his visions and innovation which have brought Burgundy to where it is today. With this prominent mentor, Emmanuel Rouget was trained in 1985 to start his own business - with Jayer’s tradition and craftmanship as a model.
Jayer himself had two daughters, but their lack of interest in wine production meant that Rouget was the most obvious successor. The prime step in this was taken in the mid-1980s where Rouget leased some of Jayer’s vines for production. At the time of Jayer’s final retirement in 2001, all of his fields and plots were transferred to Rouget who was the head of Domaine Emmanuel Rouget’s operations. In 2011, Rouget handed over managing operations to his two sons who now produce wine from the domain with the same respect for the craft as was inherited by their father from Henri Jayer.
Domaine Emmanuel Rouget is, despite the domain’s relatively short life, already has a special status among the world’s wine connoisseurs and even with a wide range of different wines from Village to Grand Cru classification, the big headline is "Cros Parantoux". Cros Parantoux is the name of the almost mythical field, where Henri Jayer’s most excellent wines have had their origin. Domaine Emmanuel Rouget today disposes of 0.72 ha of Cros Parantoux's total 1 ha. The remaining 0.28 ha is today managed by Domaine Méo-Camuzet, another of Burgundy’s great producers.
Domaine Emmanuel Rouget's production of Cros Parantoux limits itself to only 3,000-3,500 bottles per year, which makes it extremely rare. At the same time, it is desirable among the world’s wine connoisseurs because it is not only a wine from the top shelf of Burgundy but also the heritage of legendary Henri Jayer.
Cros Parantoux - a unique History
Where there is mention of Henri Jayer and Emmanuel Rouget, we cannot escape the legendary Cros Parantoux. Located peacefully in the middle of the Vosne-Romanée wine mecca, just above the prominent neighbour, Grand Cru field Richebourgh, Cros Parantoux has its own fabulous history. Henri Jayer took over his first plot of the field in 1951 that had decayed into uselessness since the First World War. With large quantities of dynamite and hard work, Jayer made the field usable and in 1953 planted the first vines.
Cros Parantoux was Jayer’s most excellent wine and serves as a brilliant example of both wine investment and the weight of the Cros Parantoux-name: In 1990, Jayer sold a box of 12 bottles of 1985 Cros Parantoux with a value of less than € 300. In 2016, approximately six years after Henri Jayer’s death, a similar box of 1985 Cros Parantoux was sold at Christie's auction in Hong Kong with a value equivalent to almost € 250,000. In 2018, the very last wines from Jayer’s cellar were sold at an auction, and even a box of 12 bottles of Cros Parantoux went under the hammer and set a world record for the world's most expensive box of wine (12 bottles) with a winning bid of over € 500,000. An increase in value of more than 166,000% since 1990. A proof of Henri Jayer’s status as one of the greatest producers of Burgundy and Cros Parantoux's unique history.
This was the irrevocably final Jayer Cros Parantoux - if Cros Parantoux is wanted today, we must, therefore, look for Domaine Emmanuel Rouget.
+25% in Less than 12 Months
Wines from Domaine Emmanuel Rouget are in general amongst the best in the world and looking specifically at the top wine from Cros Parantoux, this is an extremely desirable wine among both collectors and wine connoisseurs - and this can also be seen in the price development:
The price of a 2015 vintage of Rouget's Cros Parantoux has, in less than 12 months, increased by 8.7% while the 2014 vintage has increased by all of 25%. This witnesses Domaine Emmanuel Rouget's popularity, the quality and not least the strength of the Cros Parantoux brand.
At the same time, it is remarkable that Emmanuel Rouget’s Cros Parantoux appears to be utterly unaffected by the headwind that has otherwise been seen in Burgundy in 2019. Despite the trade war, Brexit and other events that may have contributed to even large Burgundy producers having experienced a temporary fall in prices, Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Cros Parantoux has provided impressive returns on investment for investors. A trend that, seen from a historical perspective, should be expected to continue.
Rouget Cros Parantoux: Purchase if Possible
With a typical annual production of just 3,000-3,500 bottles, Rouget Cros Parantoux is, of course, an extremely rare wine that is also extremely desirable. A look at wine-searcher.com will show that the availability or lack of the same, is clear since, at the time of writing, only a few boxes of the young 2016 vintage are available in the whole of Europe. Looking at other vintages, there is currently only one single box available in Europe that is not sold by Rare Wine Invest.
For collectors, connoisseurs and the best restaurants in the world, this means it that it is not a question of whether they want to buy Rouget Cros Parantoux, but instead whether this is at all possible.
Rare Wine Invest’s Opinion
We recommend investment in Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Cros Parantoux since, despite its young age seen in a Burgundy context, the domain is among the largest producers in the region and the top wine Cros Parantoux is something rather special.
The link to Henri Jayer has undoubtedly helped to ensure the domain’s great success, and if you want wine today from the legend himself, Rouget Cros Parantoux is amongst the closest you can get - something that the wine world has recognised long ago and makes this wine particularly desirable.
Domaine Emmanuel Rouget is, however, not only in the shadow of Henri Jayer, but has single-handedly proved able to produce world-class wine and, while wines from even the most prodigious producers experienced a temporary fall in prices in 2019, Rouget Cros Parantoux has delivered attractive returns on investment to investors. This is indicative of Rouget Cros Parantoux’s not only being able to provide serious returns on investment but, at the same time, being able to be a solid ballast in the portfolio, when everything else is behaving abnormally.
Under ordinary circumstances, we would recommend specific vintages, but with Cros Parantoux from Rouget, there are no ordinary circumstances. With such minimal production and such an acknowledged and sought-after wine, it is a question of whether the wine can actually be obtained and purchased - and you now have a rare opportunity to do so.
It is recommended to act quickly as the extremely limited volumes are expected to be sold out quickly. Everything is sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
Whole Boxes or Loose Bottles
Whole boxes are extremely rare and would be an impressive addition to any portfolio and would, in their entirety, be attractive boxes in the future. At the same time, it is also possible to buy loose bottles that would provide an excellent opportunity for purchasing in the same attractive case, but at a price that makes it possible to add Cros Parantoux to any portfolio
